Gas Dryer Installation Requirements Explained

What a gas dryer hookup needs: supply pipe size, a shutoff within 6 feet, natural gas vs. propane and garage height, with notes for San Diego garages.

TrueFix San Diego5 min read

Gas dryers are still common across San Diego, especially in garages of tract homes built before the push toward all-electric construction. A gas dryer needs the same venting as an electric one and a plain 120-volt outlet, plus a gas supply. The installation requirements cover that supply, the shutoff valve, the fuel type and where the dryer may sit, and they're detailed because the dryer burns fuel inside your home.

What the guides say

Why each rule exists

  • •Supply size. The burner needs a steady volume of gas. Small tubing on a long run can starve it, which is why the small-tubing allowance stops at 20 feet.
  • •A nearby shutoff. A valve within 6 feet lets anyone stop the gas before moving or servicing the dryer.
  • •Fuel type. Natural gas and LP burn at different pressures through different orifices. A dryer set for one won't burn correctly on the other until it's converted.
  • •New connectors. A connector that's been bent, kinked or corroded during earlier moves can leak; a new approved line avoids that.
  • •Garage height. Raising the burner 18 inches keeps its ignition source above the floor, where heavier-than-air fuel vapors from cars, gas cans and mowers collect.

How this plays out in San Diego homes

  • •Garage laundry is the norm. In Clairemont, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo, El Cajon and Chula Vista, the dryer usually lives in the garage. The 18-inch rule is easy to miss, because many garage dryers sit on the slab or on a short pedestal. Check your model's guide; if it carries the same rule, a sturdy platform is the usual answer.
  • •Propane in the backcountry. Most of the metro area is on SDG&E natural gas. Some rural East County and backcountry homes run on propane from a tank, and a dryer bought for natural gas needs a proper LP conversion before it's used there.
  • •Earthquake movement. California homes are built with seismic movement in mind. A flexible appliance connector in good condition, with some slack, tolerates movement far better than one stretched tight or kinked behind a dryer pushed against the wall.
  • •Going electric. Some owners are replacing gas dryers with electric or heat pump models. That needs a 240-volt circuit and a capped gas line; see 3-wire vs. 4-wire dryer outlets.

How to check your hookup (look, don't loosen)

  1. Check the rating plate for the gas type it's set up for. Piped utility gas is natural gas; a tank outside the house means LP.
  2. Find the dryer's gas shutoff and measure its distance. It should be within 6 feet and reachable.
  3. Look at the connector between the valve and the dryer. It should be an approved appliance connector, not kinked or crushed.
  4. Confirm the dryer plugs into a grounded three-prong 120-volt outlet with no adapter.
  5. In a garage, measure the height of the dryer's base above the floor.
  6. Make sure no water heater or furnace shares a small closet with the dryer.

What goes wrong

  • •An undersized supply or wrong fuel setting gives a weak, lazy or yellow flame and long drying times.
  • •A distant or blocked shutoff leaves no quick way to stop the gas.
  • •A kinked or reused connector can leak.
  • •Poor combustion raises carbon monoxide risk. Every home with gas appliances should have working CO alarms.

What we check on a service visit

A gas dryer that tumbles but stays cold usually has an ignition problem: the igniter, flame sensor, gas valve coils or a thermal fuse. We confirm gas is reaching the valve, watch the ignition sequence and test each part before quoting. Signs of a gas leak or a damaged connector mean we stop and recommend a licensed plumber or SDG&E before going further. See our dryer repair page, including Whirlpool gas dryers.

Gas dryers follow the same vent length limits as electric ones; see dryer vent maximum length. A gas range uses the same kind of shutoff and connector on a larger supply; see gas range installation requirements.

Work for other trades

  • •Connecting, disconnecting or moving a gas dryer, and adding or replacing a shutoff valve, is work for a licensed plumber or gas contractor.
  • •LP conversion should be done by a qualified technician, and the 13-inch pressure check needs proper gauges.
  • •If you smell gas, leave the house without touching light switches, phones or plugs, and call SDG&E or 911 from outside.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse the old gas connector when I replace my dryer? The Whirlpool installation instructions call for a new approved supply line. Connectors are inexpensive, and an old one that's been bent and moved is the weak point in the hookup.

Why does my garage dryer need to be 18 inches off the floor? The Whirlpool gas dryer guide requires it to keep the burner above where fuel vapors settle in a garage. Check your own model's guide for its garage rule.
