Working in San Diego homes, condos and rentals

A refrigerator runs around the clock, so the parts that fail are the ones that never rest: evaporator and condenser fans, the defrost heater and its thermostat, door gaskets and the thermistors that report temperature to the control. Most warm-fridge calls trace back to airflow or defrost rather than the compressor, which is why we diagnose before we quote. Hard local water also shortens the life of water filters, inlet valves and ice makers on models with a dispenser.

What your refrigerator is telling you

The symptoms we are asked about most, and what usually sits behind each one. A symptom narrows the search; the technician confirms the failed part before quoting.

Freezer cold, fresh-food side warm
Cold is being made but not delivered. The usual cause is an evaporator iced over by a defrost fault, or an evaporator fan that has stopped.
Water under the crisper drawers
A frozen or blocked defrost drain. Meltwater that should reach the drain pan overflows inside the cabinet instead.
Runs constantly, warm air at the base
A condenser coil packed with dust or a condenser fan that has stopped, so heat cannot leave the machine.
Clicking every few minutes, not cooling
The compressor is trying to start and failing. The start relay is the first suspect, well before the compressor itself.
Slow dispenser or no ice
Scale on the inlet valve screen, a filter past its life or a frozen fill tube, more often than a failed ice maker.
Food freezing in the fresh-food section
An air damper stuck open or a thermistor reading low, so the control keeps sending cold air.

Before you book a refrigerator repair

Safe checks you can do first

  • Check the vents inside are not blocked by packed shelves, and that the temperature setting has not been bumped.
  • Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points around the gasket. If it slides out with no drag, the seal is not holding.
  • Replace a water filter that is past its date before assuming the dispenser or ice maker has failed.
  • Vacuum the condenser coil if it is reachable behind the kick plate or at the back.

Unplug the appliance or switch it off at the breaker before reaching behind or inside it.

When to call a technician

  • The fresh-food side stays above 40°F for several hours after you have cleared the vents.
  • The compressor clicks on and off without starting, or the unit is silent with the light on.
  • Ice keeps building on the back wall of the freezer, or water keeps returning under the drawers.
  • You see oily residue near the tubing or hear hissing: that is sealed-system work.

FAQ

Refrigerator Repair — Common Questions

Straight answers to the questions San Diego customers ask us most. If yours isn't here, include it with your booking request and we'll answer it.

Still have questions?

Tell us what the appliance is doing and we'll arrange a visit anywhere in our San Diego service area.

Usually not. That split is the classic sign of an airflow or defrost problem rather than a failed compressor: the freezer is still making cold, but it is not reaching the fresh-food compartment. The usual causes are an evaporator iced over because the defrost heater stopped working, or a failed evaporator fan. Both are at the less expensive end of refrigerator repair.

Airflow, defrost and fan repairs generally fall in the low-to-mid hundreds. Sealed-system work, such as a refrigerant leak, a restriction or a failed compressor, costs well above that, and on a mass-market unit late in its life it is often not worth doing. We establish which you are facing during the diagnosis, before you commit to anything.

Most household refrigerators are rated for a room-temperature range that a San Diego garage leaves behind in summer, especially inland, where garages get very hot on summer afternoons and during Santa Ana heat. The condenser cannot shed heat fast enough and the compressor runs nonstop. On cold inland nights, some single-thermostat models stop cooling the freezer altogether. Garage-ready models are designed for this; a standard unit cannot be converted into one.

It is a reasonable stopgap if food is at risk. Unplugging for a day with the doors open and towels down often brings cooling back for a few days or weeks, and that result itself tells us the defrost system has failed. The ice will return until the defrost heater, its thermostat or the control is put right, so book the repair rather than repeating the defrost.

Refrigerator repair in San Diego

Refrigerator repair across San Diego County — 44 service areas, 87 ZIP codes, and 37 manufacturers that actually build refrigerators. Most repairs run $150–$500 and take about 1–3 hours on site, including diagnosis.

We work a refrigerator in a set order: airflow first, then the defrost system, then the sealed system — an evaporator iced solid by a failed defrost heater produces the same 'not cooling' complaint as a dead compressor, and the two repairs are hundreds of dollars apart. That sequence exists because it is the cheapest path to the right answer, not the fastest path to a sale — and it is why we diagnose in your home rather than quoting from a description.

To book, request a visit online with the brand, the model number and what the refrigerator is actually doing.

The refrigerator symptom most often misread

Across every brand we service, the refrigerator fault we see misinterpreted most is a fresh-food compartment that is warm while the freezer stays cold, which owners reasonably read as a partial failure and which is usually a blocked airflow path or a failed evaporator fan rather than anything terminal. It matters because the wrong reading leads to the wrong part, and on a refrigerator the wrong part is often the most expensive one in the machine.

That is the value of a diagnostic visit: not confirming that the appliance is broken, which you already know, but establishing which component failed and what it will cost to put right — before you have committed to anything.

What San Diego does to a refrigerator

Two local conditions shape refrigerator work here more than anything else. The first is water: most of what reaches San Diego taps is imported from the Colorado River and Northern California, and it is hard, so scale builds on heating elements, inlet valves and sensors until it shows up as a fault code that looks electronic. For a refrigerator specifically, the factor that matters is hard water reaching the ice maker, the water filter and the dispenser valve, which slows ice and water long before anything has actually failed, and condenser coils that collect dust faster than most owners expect.

The second is geography. Near the coast, salt air and the marine layer corrode coils, connectors and hinges. Inland, hot summers and Santa Ana winds put garage appliances under real heat stress. Downtown and Mission Valley condos add compact equipment and building logistics, the older uptown and South Bay neighborhoods add aging wiring, gas lines and drains, and the backcountry adds well water, propane and long rural power lines. The same refrigerator behaves differently in each.
