Freezer Repair in San Diego
We repair upright and chest freezers, built-in freezer columns and freezer drawers, both frost-free and manual-defrost. Work covers defrost heaters and thermostats, evaporator and condenser fans, start relays and capacitors, thermostats and controls, door and lid gaskets, drain tubes, and sealed-system diagnosis.
Working in San Diego homes, condos and rentals
A freezer runs continuously and has to hold a temperature well below freezing, so small faults show up quickly as soft ice cream and frost on the walls. Frost-free uprights depend on a defrost heater, a defrost thermostat and an evaporator fan; manual-defrost chest freezers are simpler but rely on a good lid seal. Garage freezers are common across San Diego County, and inland summer heat can push a standard unit past the ambient range it was designed for.

What your freezer is telling you
The symptoms we are asked about most, and what usually sits behind each one. A symptom narrows the search; the technician confirms the failed part before quoting.
- Frost on the walls and soft ice cream
- A defrost failure on a frost-free model, or a door or lid that is not sealing.
- Running constantly
- A dusty condenser coil, a failed condenser fan, or a gasket letting warm air in.
- Silent with the light on, warming up
- A start relay or thermostat keeping the compressor off.
- Water under or in front of the unit
- A blocked defrost drain or an overflowing drain pan.
- Garage freezer soft in a heat wave
- The garage is outside the unit's rated operating range. That is not always a fault, but it does shorten the compressor's life.
- Temperature alarm beeping
- The cabinet has risen above the alarm threshold, or a door has been left ajar.
Before you book a freezer repair
Safe checks you can do first
- Close the door or lid on a strip of paper all the way around; it should drag when you pull it.
- Vacuum the condenser coil and leave space for air around the cabinet.
- Check the outlet; garage outlets are often on a GFCI that has tripped.
- On a manual-defrost model, defrost once frost is about a quarter of an inch thick.
Unplug the appliance or switch it off at the breaker before reaching behind or inside it.
When to call a technician
- The freezer stays above 0°F with the door closed.
- The compressor clicks but will not start.
- Frost comes back soon after a defrost on a frost-free model.
- You see oily residue near the tubing or hear hissing.

USDA guidance is about 48 hours for a full freezer and about 24 hours for a half-full one, as long as the door stays closed. Keep it shut, avoid checking on it, and book as soon as you notice the temperature rising.
Yes, if it is rated for it. Inland garages in El Cajon, Rancho Bernardo or Mira Mesa get very hot in summer and can cool down on winter nights, and a standard freezer can struggle at both ends. Garage-rated models handle the range; either way, leave space around the condenser for air.
Usually the lid gasket, or a lid that does not close square because something is propping it. Every opening also lets in moist air, which is why freezers near the coast frost faster. Manual-defrost chest freezers should be defrosted once frost reaches about a quarter of an inch.
Fans, start relays, thermostats, defrost parts and gaskets are inexpensive and almost always worth fixing. A failed compressor or a refrigerant leak on an older standalone freezer usually is not, and we say so plainly when that is what we find.
Freezer repair in San Diego
Freezer repair across San Diego County — 44 service areas, 87 ZIP codes, and 27 manufacturers that actually build freezers. Most repairs run $150–$400 and take about 1–2 hours on site, including diagnosis.
We work a freezer in a set order: the door seal and the defrost system before the sealed system — frost buildup is a symptom with several causes and only one of them is expensive. That sequence exists because it is the cheapest path to the right answer, not the fastest path to a sale — and it is why we diagnose in your home rather than quoting from a description.

The freezer symptom most often misread
Across every brand we service, the freezer fault we see misinterpreted most is silent failure: a freezer in the garage gives no fault code and no alarm, so the first sign is usually food that has thawed and refrozen. It matters because the wrong reading leads to the wrong part, and on a freezer the wrong part is often the most expensive one in the machine.
That is the value of a diagnostic visit: not confirming that the appliance is broken, which you already know, but establishing which component failed and what it will cost to put right — before you have committed to anything.
What San Diego does to a freezer
Two local conditions shape freezer work here more than anything else. The first is water: most of what reaches San Diego taps is imported from the Colorado River and Northern California, and it is hard, so scale builds on heating elements, inlet valves and sensors until it shows up as a fault code that looks electronic. For a freezer specifically, the factor that matters is chest and upright freezers in San Diego garages, which face summer heat inland, dust on the condenser, and GFCI outlets that can trip without anyone noticing.
The second is geography. Near the coast, salt air and the marine layer corrode coils, connectors and hinges. Inland, hot summers and Santa Ana winds put garage appliances under real heat stress. Downtown and Mission Valley condos add compact equipment and building logistics, the older uptown and South Bay neighborhoods add aging wiring, gas lines and drains, and the backcountry adds well water, propane and long rural power lines. The same freezer behaves differently in each.
