Dishwasher Repair in San Diego
We service built-in 24-inch and 18-inch dishwashers, panel-ready and drawer designs, on both heated-dry and condensation-dry platforms. Work covers inlet valves, drain and circulation pumps, spray arms and diverters, filters and sumps, heating elements, door latches, springs and gaskets, and control faults.
Working in San Diego homes, condos and rentals
A dishwasher fills, heats, circulates and drains, so it is a plumbing appliance as much as an electrical one. San Diego's hard, imported water leaves scale on inlet screens, spray-arm jets and heating surfaces, and a water-hardness setting left at its factory default makes white film and spotting worse. Many complaints that sound like a failed pump turn out to be a clogged filter, a blocked spray arm or a supply that is not reaching temperature.

What your dishwasher is telling you
The symptoms we are asked about most, and what usually sits behind each one. A symptom narrows the search; the technician confirms the failed part before quoting.
- Water standing in the bottom
- A clogged filter, a blocked air gap or disposer inlet, or a failed drain pump.
- White film on glasses
- Hard water with the hardness setting left at default, or an empty rinse-aid dispenser. Etching that will not wipe off is permanent.
- Top rack still dirty
- The upper spray-arm feed or the diverter, or scale blocking the jets.
- Water on the floor
- The door gasket, a pump seal or the inlet connection. Many models shut down when a float in the base pan detects a leak.
- Hums but does not fill
- A scaled or failed inlet valve, a supply valve under the sink that is closed, or a float stuck in the raised position.
- Dishes wet at the end
- On condensation-drying models such as Bosch or Miele, damp plastics can be normal. Otherwise, a heater, thermostat or empty rinse aid.
Before you book a dishwasher repair
Safe checks you can do first
- Remove and rinse the filter at the bottom of the tub; on most modern models it twists out.
- Check the supply valve under the sink is open and the drain hose is not kinked.
- Run the kitchen tap until it is hot before starting a cycle.
- Top up rinse aid, and dishwasher salt if the model has a built-in softener.
Unplug the appliance or switch it off at the breaker before reaching behind or inside it.
When to call a technician
- Water is reaching the floor, or the leak sensor has shut the machine down.
- It hums without filling, or fills and drains straight away.
- There is a burning smell or it trips the breaker.
- The door will not latch, so no cycle will start.

Dishwasher Repair — Common Questions

If it is a Bosch, Miele, ASKO or most other European dishwasher, there may be no drying element at all; those machines dry by condensation against a stainless tub. Cool dishes and damp plastics are designed behavior, not a fault. On models that do use a heater, a failed element or a rinse-aid dispenser that is empty can cause wet dishes.
Usually San Diego's hard water, often combined with a water-hardness setting left at the factory default. Many dishwashers have a hardness setting that is never adjusted after installation, and models with a built-in softener need salt topped up. We set the hardness level correctly during the visit where the model supports it, which often fixes the problem without a part.
That points to the diverter or the upper spray-arm supply rather than the pump. Top-rack coverage depends on water being routed there, so a diverter fault or a blocked feed causes exactly this while the bottom rack washes normally. Scale in the spray-arm jets is another common cause with hard water. We check arm rotation and jets before condemning a pump.
Food trapped in the filter, standing water from a slow drain, or sink water flowing back because the drain hose has no high loop or the air gap is blocked. Clean the filter first. If the smell is back within a few days, the drain path needs attention, and that is a quick thing for us to confirm on site.
Dishwasher repair in San Diego
Dishwasher repair across San Diego County — 44 service areas, 87 ZIP codes, and 27 manufacturers that actually build dishwashers. Most repairs run $120–$380 and take about 1–2 hours on site, including diagnosis.
We work a dishwasher in a set order: water in, then water out, then the wash arms — poor cleaning is far more often a supply, spray-arm or filter problem than a pump or motor failure. That sequence exists because it is the cheapest path to the right answer, not the fastest path to a sale — and it is why we diagnose in your home rather than quoting from a description.

The dishwasher symptom most often misread
Across every brand we service, the dishwasher fault we see misinterpreted most is condensation-drying models leaving plastics wet and dishes cool, which is designed behavior on many European platforms rather than a fault. It matters because the wrong reading leads to the wrong part, and on a dishwasher the wrong part is often the most expensive one in the machine.
That is the value of a diagnostic visit: not confirming that the appliance is broken, which you already know, but establishing which component failed and what it will cost to put right — before you have committed to anything.
What San Diego does to a dishwasher
Two local conditions shape dishwasher work here more than anything else. The first is water: most of what reaches San Diego taps is imported from the Colorado River and Northern California, and it is hard, so scale builds on heating elements, inlet valves and sensors until it shows up as a fault code that looks electronic. For a dishwasher specifically, the factor that matters is hard water, which films glassware and blocks spray-arm jets, and which many dishwashers have a hardness setting for that installers routinely leave at default.
The second is geography. Near the coast, salt air and the marine layer corrode coils, connectors and hinges. Inland, hot summers and Santa Ana winds put garage appliances under real heat stress. Downtown and Mission Valley condos add compact equipment and building logistics, the older uptown and South Bay neighborhoods add aging wiring, gas lines and drains, and the backcountry adds well water, propane and long rural power lines. The same dishwasher behaves differently in each.
